Antibiotics and medication

Did you know that 75% of people on ADHD medication experience side effects? There are about 100,000 adults who regularly take this type of medication, which means that there are 75,000 Dutch people who suffer from unpleasant symptoms.

These medications are supposed to make you feel better. Because of the side effects, you may prefer to stop taking it, which of course is a shame. In this blog you can read which side effects are common and what microdosing could mean for ADHD.

Do the Benefits of ADHD Medication Outweigh the Disadvantages?

In ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) you suffer from attention deficit, you can be very agile, active and impulsive. The condition is most common in children, but also occurs in adults. If medication is prescribed, it is often methylphenidate.

This drug can help with improving attention and concentration and has a positive impact on mood. Strangely enough, in the information about the drug, it is reported that they do not know exactly why this drug would help with ADHD.

Users of methylphenidate are generally satisfied with the drug. Research shows that three quarters are better able to concentrate and have more peace in their heads. This allows them to perform better at work or study. However, side effects also occur and when people stop, it turns out that in 60% of the cases it is because of these side effects.

These Are The Side Effects Of ADHD Medication

Many people with ADHD take medication and because of the symptoms they do so for a long time. So it is certainly good to keep an eye on the side effects of these drugs. Side effects centre Lareb and patient association Impuls & Woortblind therefore conducted a survey among 848 people aged 16 and older who use ADHD medication.

80% of those surveyed were taking methylphenidate. Well-known brands are Ritalin and Concerta. The most frequently mentioned side effects were:

  • Palpitations
  • Reduced appetite
  • Feeling of nervousness
  • Apathy

Less frequently mentioned side effects were:

  • Depression
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Sleep disorders

In the leaflet of ADHD medication there is always a list of side effects and the symptoms mentioned above are also mentioned. While these side effects are annoying enough, there are also side effects that can have serious consequences for your health.

These side effects are very rare (occurring in less than 1 person in 100):

  • An increased risk of cardiac arrhythmia, where you may experience sudden dizziness or brief loss of consciousness.
  • High blood pressure (sometimes permanent)
  • Dejection, irritability
  • Confusion
  • Worsening of tics
  • Shortness of breath
  • Depression
  • Increased risk of stroke
  • In case of hypersensitivity to the drug: rash, itching, joint pain, hives. Very rare: reaction with fever, swelling of tongue, lips or throat or severe skin abnormality.

Advice In The Case Of Side Effects

It is impossible to predict whether you will experience any side effects. They can occur with any drug. Often you have a certain sensitivity to an ingredient in the remedy. In some cases, side effects cause so much inconvenience that it is better to intervene. So it is advisable to keep an eye on how you are feeling. If your health (mental or physical) is suffering too much, see a doctor with your symptoms.

The doctor can advise you about the possibilities. Alternatives can often be found, such as adjusting the dose, taking the drug at a different time or using a different method of administration. It is also possible that you will be prescribed a different medicine.

Microdosing in ADHD

But you could also consider microdosing for ADHD. Microdosing means that you take a very small dose (only one tenth of a normal dose) of a psychedelic substance. Think of magic truffles or magic mushrooms. At a normal dose they cause a trip, but you don’t have to deal with that when microdosing.

Microdosing can cause a change at a subtle level in the brain. It brings your body and mind into balance and can therefore have positive effects on the symptoms of ADHD. For example, it could improve concentration, it promotes creative thinking, has a positive influence on sleep and mood.

One of the great advantages of microdosing is that it hardly has any side effects. When people with ADHD take medication, they often feel tired, dull and not themselves. Microdosing makes you feel good about yourself and allows you to enjoy your own personality again. Truffles and magic mushrooms are natural substances that work with your body instead of suppressing certain characteristics.

Do you want to try microdosing, then you can buy in our shop the handy, ready-to-use package of Microdosing XP Truffles  If you are on medication, first consult your doctor whether microdosing is a good idea in your situation.
