Losing weight is something that doesn’t come easily to most people, so it would be nice if psilocybin could help with that. Can psilocybin provide support? In doing so, we can look at both full dose or microdosing. Below you can read more about the possibilities of this mind-altering substance in losing weight.
The power of psychedelics on the human psyche
These days, there is much talk about Ozempic, the miracle drug that can help lose weight. This drug directly affects metabolism and appetite. If we look at what psilocybin in magic mushrooms or truffles might do, the effects are markedly different. Psilocybin affects the brain, our behavior and our emotional and mental well-being. DAat is also the reason why there is a lot of interest in psilocybin as a treatment for PTSD, depression and addiction.
You can use psilocybin in two ways: a full dose or a microdose with microdosing truffles. At a full dose, the effects are intense: there may be hallucinations, where your senses become disturbed. Furthermore, it affects your mood, you can feel euphoric and it can change your thought patterns.
If you take a microdose, the dose is about 10 times lower. This can cause psilocybin to have a very subtle effect on your brain. Many users experience reduced anxiety, increased self-confidence, more energy and better concentration. Microdosing can help you feel better about yourself and break stuck patterns. So it is not so crazy to think that psilocybin could help with weight loss by affecting mental and emotional well-being. There is also research that points to that.
Research on psychedelics and losing weight
Ward Able, MD, a physician and pharmacist, is a director of the Clintell company and a consultant for NeonMind Inc. He does research on the impact of psychedelics on obesity. He notes that psychedelics could be used as part of psychotherapy. This high dose can act as an agonist on serotonergic receptors and in particular the 5-HT2A receptors.
“This causes a mind-altering experience, which could support psychotherapy,” Able explains. “In addition, it affects the 5-HT2C receptors, which play a role in feeling hungry or satiated.” Now that this is clear, he thinks it is also possible to use a much lower dose, 10 to 15% of a normal dose, and take that daily or 4 times a week.
This lower dose can lead to an increase in feelings of satiety, reducing a patient’s hunger. In addition, microdosing can also improve feelings of well-being.
Unfortunately, not much research has been done on the effects of psychedelics on obesity. But there have been e in vitro clinical studies on rats. (The studies cited are largely experimental and many were conducted on animals, so the results are not readily applicable to humans.)
These rats were fed a palatable diet that was high in calories. They were allowed to eat as much as they wanted. Then they were given 2 different doses of psilocybin: a high dose that induced a trip and a lower dose that would affect the 5-HT2C receptors.
Able says, “What was found was that at both the high and low dose there was a reduction in weight gain. The reduction is a powerful and clear signal that psilocybin works as we thought it would. Now we can start turning this into clinical trials on humans. We will do that in our next study.”.

An animal study showed that chronic treatment with psilocybin led to a decrease in weight gain in obese rats. Further research is needed to determine whether these effects also occur in humans. PUBMED
What is the link between mental well-being and losing weight with psilocybin?
So how can psilocybin help with weight loss if it doesn’t directly affect metabolism or your sense of hunger? Microdosing can affect your mental and emotional well-being, which in turn can indirectly contribute to your motivation to deal with food differently.
1. Influence on body awareness
When you microdose you can experience becoming more aware of your own body and what a wonderful system it is. People who microdose find that they come to appreciate their own bodies (and lives) more and, as a result, take better care of them. This often manifests itself in healthier eating habits.
2. Less stress and stress eating
Microdosing may contribute to increased resilience to stress. One of the most common causes of overeating is stress (and associated emotions such as anxiety, depression, frustration and the like). We seek comfort in food, even when we are not hungry at all. Who doesn’t recognize when you snack on an entire bag of chips at night or wolf down a bar of chocolate because you feel like crap?
Psilocybin helps you deal with anxiety and stress differently. It has a calming effect and can help counter depressive feelings. If you suffer less from stress, hopefully the tendency to eat out of emotion will also diminish.
3. Being mindful in life
One of the benefits of psilocybin is that it helps you to be more mindful in life. It provides increased self-awareness. People also frequently combine microdosing with meditation, yoga, breathwork and mindfulness exercises. This encourages introspection and can help you become aware of stuck thinking patterns. This can obviously help you become aware of your habits and thoughts around food as well, after which you can make healthier choices.
4. More self-confidence
Often obesity is associated with lower self-esteem and less self-confidence. When you are more confident, it can have a positive impact on your self-image, and this often leads to a better outlook on life. You can have more self-love experience and start taking better care of yourself. This can help you find the motivation to choose a healthier lifestyle.
Losing weight is difficult and microdosing with psilocybin can help, but it is not a panacea. It remains necessary to work on yourself. Whether you are overweight or not, it is important to take good care of yourself. And that’s where psilocybin can provide support anyway. If you have questions about weight loss and whether psilocybin can contribute to it, see your doctor and ask for advice. Psychedelics such as magic mushrooms are not for everyone. It is important to be well informed.
Health Risks and Contraindications of Psilocybin
Psilocybin can have mental and physical effects, making it not suitable for everyone.
- Mental disorders: Not recommended for people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or psychosis susceptibility, due to risk of psychotic episodes.
- Cardiovascular: May temporarily raise blood pressure, dangerous for people with heart problems or hypertension.
- Medication interactions: May affect antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs), blood pressure medication and blood thinners.
- Neurological risks: Not recommended in epilepsy due to risk of seizures.
- Pregnancy & lactation: Insufficient research, therefore not recommended.
- Hormonal & eating disorders: May affect appetite and serotonin levels, caution in eating disorders.
- Psychedelic effects: Possible anxiety, confusion or panic attacks, especially at high doses.
The information in this blog is for informational purposes only and should not be construed as medical advice. Although there is ongoing research on the possible effects of psilocybin on mental well-being and eating behavior, there is currently no sufficient scientific evidence that psilocybin is an effective or safe agent for weight loss. The studies mentioned are largely experimental and many were conducted on animals, so the results are not readily applicable to humans.
