They have to play sports, go to music lessons and take extra subjects at school. Anything just to show that you can perform. But this mentality is harmful in the long run.

1. Decide what is successful for you

The culture of high pressure in the workplace is that you should always go for professional success. But what kind of success that revolves around, of course, is the question. Just look on Instagram and there you will see what is expected of you: huge offices full of luxury furniture, a great workout at 5 a.m. and a successful executive position in a big company.

But ask yourself, is that what you also think success is? When you pursue your own version of success, it’s easier to regain your balance. Maybe for your success, a cozy little office full of plants and having the time to take a nice trip with your children. Or that you can do some yoga exercises between work. Success is different for everyone. But it is important to become aware of what you see as successful. Only then can you stop the “rat race” and being hunted.

2. Schedule rest

Do you take enough time for rest? And we mean real rest, not just a good night’s sleep. Time for yourself to recharge, both physically and mentally. Many people today feel guilty when they take rest, but that is just the imperative voice of today’s society. Rest is not only good for you, you really need it.

So take a real time-out regularly. That means taking a bath, sitting in the sun, taking a quiet walk, listening to music, forest baths or meditating. And in all these cases, make sure you really have time for yourself. So put that smartphone aside and don’t go online sharing your “accomplishments” to show how well you’re all doing. Even then you are still preoccupied with being hunted.

3. Stop being agitated: prioritize feeling good

Productivity is important, but so is feeling good about yourself. Put your mental and physical well-being and happiness in life first on a regular basis. It will take some getting used to doing that, but it will bring you a lot. Try to schedule time each week for activities that enrich your life. Consider a gym session, pampering yourself with a massage, making time for that fun hobby that makes you happy or a day at the sauna.

Whatever decisions you make, make sure they bring you closer to your version of success.

5. Stay in touch with yourself

Being agitated creeps in. Before you know it, you get swept up in the fast pace and the requirement to always perform. So make sure you have your finger on the pulse regularly. Check to see if you are still on track. Are you still happy with your work and can you balance it with your personal life? Are you still feeling good mentally and physically? If the answers don’t make you happy, see what you can do for yourself so you can feel good again.
