What do you need to grow mushrooms

  1. Grain (nutrition): Mushrooms need a source of nutrients to grow. Often grain such as rye or corn is used because it is rich in carbohydrates and other nutrients essential for the growth of the mycelium (the root structure of the mushroom).
  2. Substrate (soil): The substrate provides physical support for the mycelium and aids in water retention. This may include wood, straw, sawdust or any other organic material in which the mycelium can grow. The substrate should be sterile or well-treated to avoid unwanted bacteria and fungi.
  3. Culture (the mycelium or spores): This is the biological basis of the mushroom. The mycelium is the vegetative form of the mushroom and grows through the substrate to form the mushroom. It can be purchased as “liquid culture” or home-grown from spores. (we recommend liquid culture)
  4. With these three components, you can grow mushrooms, depending on the kind you want to grow.

Humidity and hygiene

The process requires careful control of factors such as temperature, humidity and hygiene to obtain a successful harvest.

Humidity: You maintain humidity by growing mushrooms in a bag or monotub. This keeps the substrate moist, which is important for mushroom growth.

Hygiene: To prevent contamination, we work with an injection port on the bags. This makes it easy to inject the mycelium (the “seeds” of the mushroom) into the bag without the need for a special clean room. Clients should only use a clean needle to ensure that everything remains hygienic.
