Do you wonder how long the substances in magic mushrooms or truffles actually remain in your body? That’s a fascinating question. When you are tripping you will notice the effects for several hours. But when the trip is over, that doesn’t mean that the mind-altering substances have all been processed by your body either. In this blog, we’re going to talk about that.

How the body processes psilocybin and psilocin

One of the body’s tasks is to convert nutrients into energy. What you put into it goes through the body via digestion. Useful substances are absorbed and processed and what remains is excreted. This applies to food, but also to other substances, such as medication and drugs.

For example, do you take magic mushrooms or magic truffles in, then you will find that you will tripping. This means that the psychoactive substances (in this case psilocybin) have been absorbed by the body. But when the effects disappear, which is usually after a few hours, the question is whether those mind-altering substances have already disappeared from your body. How long do these substances actually stay in your body?

So shrooms and truffles contain psilocybin. Its chemical formula is O-phosphoryl-4-hydroxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine. There are many different types of psychoactive mushrooms, more than 200 have now been discovered. The most well-known psychoactive mushrooms are of the species Psilocybe cubensis. Some species are more powerful than others.

Therefore, this means that the psilocybin content in these mushrooms is a lot higher. Compare, for example, Panaeolus cyanescens (Copelandia cyanescens), which is one of the most potent magic mushrooms on earth, with a psilocybin content of 2.95%. Then, of course, less strong magic mushrooms, such as Psilocybe Liniformans with a content of 0.16% are dwarfed. So it should be clear that the psilocybin content of a magic mushroom or truffle also plays a role in how quickly these substances disappear from your body.

Factors affecting psilocybin processing

Besides the psilocybin content in a magic mushroom, other factors play a role in the body’s processing of psychoactive substances. Of course, your own body also plays a role, namely your metabolism and how fast it runs. This is unique with each person. You will react differently to a dose than your friends. This is evidenced, for example, by the fact that one person will already start tripping considerably from a low dose, while another will notice almost nothing from an average dose. Several organs and glands play a role in this, such as your liver, kidneys and thyroid. Your weight also matters.

All that can be said about the rate at which a body can metabolize the substances in magic mushrooms are averages. Normally, you can notice the effects of magic mushrooms about 30 to 45 minutes after ingestion. The trip is strongest after 90 minutes. Generally, a trip lasts between 6 and 8 hours. The effects become less and less until they disappear completely.

This length of time corresponds to the conversion of psilocybin into psilocin and then the rate of excretion. The fact is that psilocybin is not actually a mind-altering substance. Only after it is converted into psilocin in the body do the psychoactive effects occur. Psilocin is then absorbed into the bloodstream and then excreted by the kidneys. The half-life of psilocin is 50 minutes. After 3 hours, your body has excreted about two-thirds of the dose you took through the kidneys.

Although a trip lasts a limited number of hours, you may notice an impact mentally or physically even longer. Research shows that tripping has long-lasting effects can have, such as new insights, an improvement in mood or changes in personality. These are generally perceived as positive and are reason psilocybin is used today as a treatment for depression, trauma and other mental disorders.

How long does psilocybin remain measurably present in the body?

As you could read earlier, the immediate effects of a trip are gone before psilocybin disappears from the body. How long could a drug test measure this psychoactive substance? There are, of course, several tests that can be taken. Psilocybin can be detected in urine, hair or blood.

If you are tested for psilocybin, the metabolites are visible in the body within 20 to 40 minutes after ingesting a magic mushroom. Having taken a low dose, psilocybin from magic mushrooms remains measurably present in the body for about 15 hours. Psilocin is processed faster, this remains measurable for about 5 hours before it is completely gone from the system.

When you use drugs wisely and only use them safely in your own home, you usually don’t have to worry about drug testing. Above all, do not drive when you are tripping and do not use dangerous devices. Your powers of reaction and judgment are impaired by using psychedelics, and of course your senses are no longer reliable either. So enjoy a trip in a safe place, where you can completely surrender to the experience. Check out our shop for our selection of magic mushrooms and magic truffles.
