Almost everyone has had it at one time or another: Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO. It is an unpleasant feeling, where you think that your life could have been better, that you are missing something important. FOMO can have a negative effect on your self-confidence and how you engage in relationships. But if you suffer from Fear of Missing Out, there may be a solution – shrooms! In this blog, you will read how
magic mushrooms
can help with FOMO and how best to use them.

What is FOMO?

In fact, FOMO (or Fear of Missing Out) is a problem of our time. The term refers to the fear that you are not keeping up in life, that everyone else is doing nice things but you. Your friends, acquaintances and family live the most luxurious, social and extraordinary lives and you just sit here at home (between textbooks, diapers or bills). Of course, the fact that this fear is mostly of our time is mainly due to our smartphones and social media. With this, we continuously get a glimpse into the lives of others.

And those lives just look great. Because what you see is always positive: a trip to Mexico, a new car or a child who has just learned to walk. People look happy, slim, beautiful and rich. Because you are constantly thumbing your nose at these success stories, you get the unpleasant feeling that you are behind, missing out on all sorts of things and not succeeding. It’s no wonder you get overwhelmed by negative feelings.

And all the while knowing full well that you should take everything with a grain of salt, because all these photos and videos are heavily edited. They are too good to be true, because they only cast a glance at what is going well and what is going badly you don’t see. But that realization doesn’t stop FOMO. Fortunately, you can do something about this, you can counteract the fear of missing out on everything and focus your energy on being present in your own life. Psychedelics, especially magic mushrooms, can potentially help with FOMO.

The effects of Fear of Missing Out

FOMO is actually the feeling of missing something and that you think you don’t count. But it can also cause all sorts of other complex emotions. These are the consequences of FOMO:

  • Lack of self-confidence (you compare yourself to others all the time and they are better than you according to you).
  • The pressure to be social or push boundaries (FOMO can make you feel like you MUST do certain things even though you would rather not do them).
  • Depressive feelings (when you focus only on what you don’t have or do, you stop paying attention to all the positive things in your life. This can make you feel gloomy and even depressed).
  • Anxiety and stress (FOMO can cause anxiety and stress because you feel like you are not good enough and have not accomplished enough. You constantly feel pressure to do more and that causes stress).

So when you suffer from the fear of missing out on everything, it may well be that you are really not comfortable in your own skin. It can cause intense feelings. Possibly magic mushrooms could be a solution to better deal with FOMO. Below we address that.

Shrooms to get over FOMO

The question now is how magic mushrooms can help with FOMO. Mushrooms contain psilocybin, a substance that is mind-altering. When tripping with magic mushrooms, it can cause hallucinations, as well as feelings of connection and new insights into yourself. It can set you on the path of self-discovery and encourage a more spiritual outlook on life.

A trip with psilocybin can also help break certain patterns and ways of thinking. A trip with magic mushrooms also affects the Default Mode Network (DMN) in the brain. This network has to do with how we see ourselves, our memories about our lives and how we think others see us. This DMN settles down more during tripping. This gives us a clearer picture of ourselves and allows us to let go of a negative self-image. And that can be an important factor in overcoming FOMO.

Several studies have shown that psilocybin can be used to treat anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. FOMO, of course, does have common ground with these disorders. In 2016, a study was conducted to find out the effects of psilocybin on social pain. This is the pain you feel when you are rejected. So that’s also part of what FOMO is.

To measure this, the brains of 21 volunteer participants were scanned. They played a virtual ball game with two other players. These two others slowly began to exclude the participant from the game. Participants had been given either a low dose of psilocybin or a placebo before the game. After the game, they expressed how they felt. Both groups of participants quickly noticed being excluded. Those who had received psilocybin felt less social pain and also experienced feelings of intense connectedness induced by the psychedelics.

Supporting magic mushrooms for FOMO with microdosing

So shrooms can be a support when you suffer from FOMO. But maybe you don’t feel like tripping. Even then, there is a solution, namely
microdosing
with psilocybin. You then take a very low dose of psilocybin (with
microdosing truffles
). This allows you to enjoy the benefits of this substance, but you can continue with your normal activities.

For example, microdosing can have a positive impact on your mood and self-confidence and can help improve your concentration and creativity. Many people report that microdosing helps them be better in the now and not be distracted by messages on social media. This, of course, is something that can come in handy with FOMO.

There are many ways to work on yourself. If using magic mushrooms or microdosing is not for you, you can also try to reduce FOMO by regularly meditating or doing
mindfulness exercises
doing. Limit social media use and make sure you don’t spend a long time on your smartphone before you go to bed. You can even choose not to watch social media at all for a certain period of time (a week or a month). If you get through that, you’ll probably feel much better about yourself.
