If you would like a little more perseverance, then it is time to try microdosing. The mind-altering substance psilocybin affects emotions, concentration and memory. Can it also boost your perseverance? You can read more about it in this blog.

How does microdosing for perseverance work?

Psilocybin is a psychoactive substance found in magic mushrooms and magic truffles. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the therapeutic potential of psilocybin and microdosing, especially in the area of mental disorders. These include stress, anxiety, depression, addiction and PTSD.

Psilocybin affects serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is very crucial to your mood. During a trip with psilocybin, areas of the brain can communicate with each other that normally cannot. This creates new connections in the brain, which can lead to new insights, changing behavior patterns and developing new habits. Often people find that they are more open-minded after a trip.

But what exactly is microdosing with psilocybin? When you take a normal dose of a psychedelic drug you start tripping. In microdosing, you only take a very small dose with a certain regularity (for example, every two to three days, this is called a routine ). You won’t trip as a result, but you may find that it has an effect on your mental health. Thus, microdosing can also potentially have a positive impact on your perseverance

What are the effects of microdosing psilocybin?

Not much research has been done on microdosing and persistence. We do not yet understand exactly how psilocybin affects the brain. But presumably psilocybin can help reduce stress and boost perseverance by promoting neuroplasticity.

This means new nerve pathways are created and the production of BDNF (a substance needed for nerve cell growth) is stimulated. Also, psilocybin may help reduce Default Mode Network (DMN) activity.
When neuroplasticity increases, new connections between neurons and parts of the brain can form. This can have the effect of better regulating your emotions and making you more resilient to stress. More connections means you can adapt to new situations faster.

When more BDNF is produced, you can respond better and more efficiently to stress, learning ability is enhanced and mood can be better regulated. During a study in which participants microdosed with LSD, researchers found that levels of BDNF in the blood increased. Although this involved LSD, scientists suspect that psilocybin will have similar effects.

The Default Mode Network or DMN is an area of the brain involved in self-reflection and fretting about yourself. This area is often very active in people who suffer from anxiety. Research shows that psilocybin can help inhibit the activity of the DMN, making you feel calmer, better able to stay in the now and less bothered by brooding.

Research on the effects of microdosing on perseverance

In 2023, a study was conducted on rats with low doses of psilocybin. This showed that it could help reduce stress in rats. The rats followed a fixed rhythm of microdoses and its influence on 5-HT2A receptors was examined. This showed:

  • The rats were more resilient to stress
  • The animals showed less obsessive behavior (excessive grooming, similar to excessive hand washing in humans)
  • Connections in the brain became stronger, higher density of synapses in certain parts of the brain
  • No unpleasant side effects. This study showed that no adverse or harmful side effects were caused by microdosing.

These positive results seem to indicate that psilocybin has great potential in the fight against mental symptoms. It can help reduce anxiety, improve focus and support cognition. So in this way, it is also a good option to boost your perseverance. More research is needed, of course, including to find out how psilocybin can best be used in humans and, for example, what dosages are optimal in humans.

Practical applications of psilocybin

Research suggests that it is mainly the increased activity of the 5-HT7 receptor that plays a role in the effects of microdosing. These receptors are, as it were, the brain’s industrious messengers. They respond to serotonin, a substance that plays an important role in what we think, feel and remember. Not everything is yet clear about the properties of these receptors, but scientists say they are critical to how we think and what we do.

According to a number of studies, when these receptors become more active, they can contribute to better concentration, memory recall and attention retention. Many enthusiastic microdosers also report that they find that microdosing helps them concentrate better and that they have more perseverance.

These receptors are also important for relaxation. Research on animals shows that these receptors can help reduce feelings of anxiety and sadness. Anecdotes from users also reveal this. When you are comfortable in your own skin and your emotions are well regulated, it naturally benefits your productivity and perseverance.

There is also a link between these receptors and easier learning and information storage. When these receptors are activated, thinking becomes clearer and you feel more in the flow. Furthermore, they are also important in being able to let go of compulsive behavior patterns. So if you want to get rid of certain behaviors (such as OCD), microdosing is a good option.
